    Hi!

I got back from Egypt recently…I loved it to pieces!
I also went to Sharm el Sheikh so I can tell you about that.

    My general advice is…..

    1) Go on some excursions because Sharm el Sheikh has been built for tourists and shows nothing of the real Egypt….You can get day trips…I would recommend and kind of desert safaros cos the desert around Sharm is stunning…..then maybe a visit to ST Catherine’s monastery – which is where they say God spoke to Moses and is near the mountain also. The coloured canyon is very beautiful and any of the oasis are nice too.
If you like diving, a trip to ras mohammed to snorkel or dive is a must!

    2) Sharm is very expensive compared to the rest of Egypt. In Sharm you pay 25 pounds per night for a room, whereas elsewhere you can get a good room for just 6 pounds….and the same goes with food….in sharm you will have similar proces to the UK, but outside of Sharm a good quality meal will cost you 4 pounds for 2 people. Just be aware that Sharm is a tourist trap

    3) Everyone wants your money….NEVER say yes to the first price. Instead tell them what you want to pay at first (start at half of what you really want to pay and then build up slowly. If they are not lowering their prices, say its too expensive and walk away…usually this brings the price down) and never pay more for something than what you would pay in England………for example, if someone offers you a keyring worth 5 english pounds, they are conning you……..and everyone’s intention in sharm is to get as much money from you as possible…so don’t fall for it

    4) In terms of food, Egyptian food is generally very good and tasty. Don’t be scared of trying things…but never drink tap water and remember that salad is washed with the tap water so is likely to cause stomach problems….although having said that, my friend had salad every day on out whole trip through egypt and never had any problems, but it’s best not to take the risk…..basically, it’s all safe if it’s well cooked.
Take some tablets for belly upsets, one of you at least will definately get belly problems at some point but this usually passes within a few days.

    5) September will be very very hot in Sharm….take a very high protection and a hat and drink LOTS……always carry water with you and plenty of it………and if you go into the desert or on any trips, this is when you really need to stock up on water and keep covered…the sun here is very intense. So be careful with the children and make sure they cover up and keep drinking.

Otherwise, enjoy your holiday and definately do some trips to see the true egypt

Go to Abu Simbel. Unforgettable. And do some reading before you go. I dont mean a tourist guide, something like "Belzoni;s Diaries". If you’re interested in Egyptology, then it’s hard not to think of the trip as being a visit into the past. Egypt is proud of its history, but always try to keep in mind that you are visiting a vibrant, modern country, and there’s plenty to appreciate there as well as in its pyramids, monuments and art.

Egypt is a very dirty country in general and very humid and hot, best advice is:

take plenty of deodorants, plenty of clean wipes, anti-septic sprays, a good first aid kit, just make sure you take plenty of clean products.

Eygypt is full of people after your money, from things like: people asking you to take your bags for you and carry em, the egypt people will do anything for your money, they will try and sell you anything, take a good travel guide with you, plan your adventures and keep all your belongings safe, you wont beleive what egypt looks like if your turn the opposite direction of the pyramids its like a shanty town! but thats my personal opinion!

You can visit the war grave where many British are buried – you may have a relative buried there.

Egypt was the biggest city in the world so do some serious reading before you go.

be wary of drinking the water, eating uncooked food, wearing any clothes that are slightly revealing (you will get pinched hard) I rode a horse and camel around the pyramids, the camel had fleas and I was nearly torn apart by the competitive guys hiring me a horse. The Cairo museum is awesome. You arrive in the country with Tourist tattooed on your forehead so you will be automatic target to be ripped off at every opportunity. Great sea food.

    be egyptian

Craig has given you sound advice.
take more than one sea wear and a head cover for every one.
    take sunblock .
take cotton clothes that arent too revealing.
take comfortable sandals , and perhaps socks to keep the sand out .
    enjoy sunbathing , swimming , snorkling , diving .
go to ST CATHERINE’s Monastry if you are interested .
take one day sea cruises . they privide sea food and beverages.
go to Al Leila Wi Leila , ie , One Thousand Nights and One .
it has folklore shows which are interesting .
take your camera and get photos all along.
carry change and give tips when you are served , your luggage is carried , etc .
the natives dont annoy that much.
they would offer you certain services , and you are free to accept or not .
you can bargain everywhere , but within normal limits .
drink bottled water and brush your teeth with it, too.
drink a lot to overcome the heat.
    enjoy yourselves

If you don’t want to buy anything don’t even enter a shop, the shopkeepers will lock you in! Happened to me in Luxor x

Don’t worry about revealing clother in Sharm, it’s fine there. Just takes lots of good quality, high factor sun cream and after sun – September will be 40s everyday. And drink lots of water. I’d eb a little concerned about taking the kids somewhere so hot. Make sure they have hats on all the time.

i tottaly agree with Cleo and Craig excellent advice and agree with night out at 101 arabian nights or alf leila. we had a great night there, wash your hands alot to help avoid tummy bugs. while the ancient sites of egypt are wonderful to see and i love them, they are a long way from sharm unless you are going to fly. and it will be very hot. the snorkelling is amazing and donmt be put off by the bad stories, common sense and a little caution will give you a wonderful holiday
